2009-10 NBA Soundtrack: What’s on your Ipod?

March 18, 2010

1. “Things Just Ain’t the Same” by Deborah Cox  (76ers w/o Miller)

The 76ers hardly look like the team that challenged the Magic in a 6-game first round playoff series last season.  Andre Miller doesn’t need 50-pt games to prove his worth–he has one of the best basketball I.Q.’s in the league & the 76ers lost their glue guy.

2. “What it is” remix by Gorilla Zoe  (Ben Wallace & co)

“Can a playa shoot a free throw? (swish!)” Ben Wallace has looked great for Detroit, except when he’s at the line.  Then again, the entire Pistons team may want to practice a few extra from the charity stripe.

3. “Jersey” by Queen Latifah  (the Nets)

“I can’t.. forget New Jersey” Only it’s for all the wrong reasons.  The 1972-73 76ers may have gone 9-73 but the team was back in the NBA Finals by 1976-77 & won the championship in 1982-83.  Hopefully the Nets can rebound in similar fashion.

4. “It’s my Time” by Fabolous feat. Jeremih  (Kevin Durant)

“Ima put it on the line cause it’s my time” competing for a scoring title & leading the Thunder to the playoffs…KD is going to be one to watch for years to come

5. “Just Gotta Make it” by Trey Songz  (D-League hopefuls)

“You see I’ve tried a 9-to-5 and it just don’t fit me…looking at you day after day, I know I…just gotta make it…just to see that smile upon your face, I know I…just gotta make it” Sundiata Gaines proved it’s all about the opportunity.

6. “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John  (All the 30-somethings playing big roles)

“I’m still standing better than I ever did…looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid.” Grant Hill & Juwan Howard are proving age is nothing but a number.

7. “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones  (Knicks)

“You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you might find…You get what you need.” The Knicks & LeBron saga continues…

8. “If I Can’t Have You” by the Bee Gees  (Cavaliers)

“If I can’t have you, I don’t want nobody baby” At least the Cavs know the Knicks feel the same way.

Got any good songs to add to the list? Post them!

Brandon Jennings is R.O.Y.

March 18, 2010

From Day 1, Brandon Jennings has made you look.  After his Euroleague stint & unorthodox draft night debut, Jennings proved you can take a different route to the NBA–as well as to the stage to shake David Stern’s hand.

After dropping 55 points vs. the Warriors in his 7th NBA game, the media gave Jennings the top slot in the rookie of the year race.  And when his shots stopped falling, everyone took it away.

Jennings once called the 55-point game both a blessing and a curse.  With that spectacular performance, Jennings had raised the bar to an unrealistic level.  He not only put himself on the map, but he consequently put his name on every single scouting report.  And once every team broke down his baskets and came up with defensive strategies, Jennings would struggle and then have to adjust.  The adjustment period for a rookie is a natural process, although for Jennings, it happened so quickly.

So naturally, his shooting percentage dropped, and people began to notice Tyreke Evans–the 4th overall pick who was putting up numbers only achieved by Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James.

However, while Jennings’ scoring wavered, his production in other areas remained consistent.  Filling up the stat sheet with assists, rebounds, and steals, Jennings proved that as a rookie he not only had a well rounded game, but the composure necessary to overcome a rough shooting stretch.

Coach Scott Skiles deserves a lot of credit for the maturation of Jennings as a player because of the confidence he had in the rookie to run the Bucks’ offense.  While many players have stepped up in the Bucks system, Jennings is the constant and his quickness and floor vision are directly related to his teammates’ increased production.

Jennings has also seemed to earn the trust and respect of his teammates, who are quick to put the ball in his hands and let him set up plays.

It is definitely easier to run an offense with Andrew Bogut putting up career numbers and additions Jerry Stackhouse and John Salmons absorbing some of the scoring load.  However, before these acquisitions, Bogut missed time due to injury & the Bucks lost their all-star Michael Redd for the season.  It was up to Jennings to keep the team competitive.

But most importantly, Jennings, with his infectious confidence, made the Bucks relevant and exciting.  The focus on him began to shift to the team as fans took notice & ESPN put them on primetime.  Now 5th in the East with one of the best records since all-star break, the Bucks look to be a tough matchup for whichever team they face.  And if one judges impact over statistics, then Jennings should still be in the top slot for rookie of the year.

As many analysts have said, it is easy to put up big numbers on a losing team.  Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry & Darren Collison look like they will be forces in the league for years to come, but based on this season, my rookie of the year choice is Jennings.

Knicks Going All-In Before The Game Even Starts

March 17, 2010

What do Jamal Crawford & Zach Randolph have in common? For one, they are both thriving with their new teams.  Secondly, they were both teammates on the Knicks for 11 games last season before getting traded despite a 6-5 start.

For the Knicks, the only way to combat the years of hemorrhaging money was to swing the pendulum in the complete opposite direction.  The team would be rebuilt from ground up.

The only problem with this method is that to rebuild, you need a foundation to build around.  Danilo Gallinari shows spurts of being a great shooter, but he is not a player that is going intrigue the likes of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.  In fact, LeBron James has a player with that skill set and a better shot selection in Mo Williams.

In Cleveland, Danny Ferry has done everything he can to make the Cavaliers championship contenders.  With the acquisition of Shaquille O’Neal, the Cavs will have the presence needed in the middle that they lacked last year vs. the Magic.  With the deadline deal for Antawn Jamison, James finally has another elite player to absorb some of the attention on offense.

In Miami, the Heat will start with a nearly clean slate next season.  With room for two max contracts, the Heat hope to rebuild a championship caliber team around Wade.  While Wade has led his team in scoring and assists 39 times this season, the hope is that he can win more by doing less if he chooses to remain in Miami.

Up the coast, the Knicks have not been discreet about their plans for the offseason.  They have put all their eggs in one basket, hoping that LeBron is attracted to the bright lights and (what seems distant now) history of MSG.  While players talk about MSG being their favorite arena and New York being the “Mecca of basketball” one has to wonder if it is mostly smoke and mirrors at this point.  Where a team plays is nothing compared to how a team plays, and LeBron is a global icon without the help of a New York address. New York needs LeBron way more than LeBron needs New York.  And everyone knows it.

If Wade & James decide to stay with the teams that drafted them, the Knicks will be left in a position where they are likely forced to overspend on the available free agents. Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley said the team plans to match offers for restricted free agent Rudy Gay. And free agents like Joe Johnson, Amar’e Stoudemire & Chris Bosh will have to determine which suitor gives them the best chance of winning.

So the Knicks have pushed all their chips in before the game even starts.  All that’s left to do is wait.
